Newcomers Dominate Elections

Politics: Two Inglewood councilmen are forced into runoffs. First-time candidates take three Glendale City Council seats left open by retirements.

Two veteran Inglewood city councilmen were driven into June runoffs and three Glendale council seats went to first-time candidates as political newcomers dominated a pair of local elections Tuesday.

In Inglewood, incumbent Daniel K. Tabor will face Curren Price Jr. in the runoff election, while Anthony Scardenzan, who was seeking a fourth term, will defend his post against Judith L. Dunlap.

Meanwhile in Glendale, a lawyer, a retired police officer and a Republican Party activist won the three seats left open by the retirement of Mayor Carl Raggio, Councilwoman Ginger Bremberg and Councilman Dick Jutras.

The winners were Richard M. Reyes, a 55-year-old retired police officer and city community relations coordinator; Sheldon S. Baker, 56, an attorney specializing in taxes and business planning; and Mary Ann Plumley, 62, a real estate agent and GOP activist.

They were trailed by David G. Weaver, 53, an engineering manager active as a homeowners’ leader; and Bob Torres, 38, a businessman.

In school board races in the two cities, Inglewood voters reelected incumbents Thomasina M. Reed and Lawrence Aubry to the Inglewood Unified School District board, and elected newcomer Dexter A. Henderson.

In Glendale, three seats up for election on the Glendale Unified School District Board of Education went to Jeanne Bentley, a veteran teacher and counselor; Jane M. Whitaker, 63, an incumbent going into her fourth term, and Lynda Rocamora, 43, a business owner.
