National Video Rentals : Widescreen ‘Mohicans’ Still No. 1

Share

While some retailers are reporting that customers have griped about the widescreen format (rectangular-shaped picture with black borders above and below) of “The Last of the Mohicans,” it’s still the top rental. Customers are complaining that the borders are annoying and the resulting smaller picture in this format makes viewing difficult on small screens, so retailers suspect that negative word of mouth may hurt rentals in the long run and cut down on the market for used copies. Meanwhile, “Mr. Saturday Night,” the Billy Crystal comedy/drama that grossed a disappointing $15.6 million, entered the chart at No. 12 and should do fair rental business. According to some retailers, Crystal hosting the Oscars increased his profile considerably and boosted rentals for the movie. “Pure Country,” starring George Strait, premiered at No. 21.

* This comedy, starring Kurt Russell and Martin Short, grossed $22.5 million in theaters and should be a solid Top 10 rental for at least the next month. It entered the chart at No. 13 but should crack the Top 10 next week.
