SOUTH : 9 Schools Receiving Gift of Computers
IBM and First Interstate Bank are donating computers to nine Los Angeles Unified School District continuation schools, starting with John Hope High School.
By emphasizing job training and student-teacher relationships, the remedial and vocational schools serve students who are unsuccessful in traditional classrooms, said Deborah Callahan, acting director of Youth Opportunities Unlimited, a South-Central-based job training and community development group. The district has 43 continuation schools.
Callahan will coordinate the yearlong distribution of 50 used IBM computers with color monitors, printers and software. She said the donation--worth $75,000--is particularly valuable because of the district’s budget problems.
Callahan said that if the equipment had been purchased, it would have cost the equivalent of one school’s budget for three years.
John Hope High School, 7840 Towne Ave., serves as the continuation school for Fremont High School, and received its computers and support equipment In March, Callahan said.
Other continuation schools receiving computers include Nemark and View Park in Pico-Union, and Whitney Young, Duke Ellington, Central/SAAY Branch, Johnson, Truth, and Metropolitan in South and South-Central. The computers are expected to reach these schools in the next two months.
