THOUSAND OAKS : Winds Force Hot-Air Balloon Onto Street

Share

A hot-air balloon came to an abrupt stop Saturday morning after high winds forced the pilot to make an unscheduled landing on a street in Thousand Oaks, authorities said.

Balloonist Frank Jones told Sheriff’s Department deputies that after he and his passengers had taken off from the Tierra Rejada Valley in Moorpark, he encountered high winds over Thousand Oaks.

For safety reasons, he attempted to land on the football field at Cal Lutheran University, Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Sparks said. But hard-blowing winds at ground level forced Jones to land prematurely on the 800 block of Woodlawn Drive.

Jones told deputies he was a balloonist with the High Times Hot Air Ballooning Co. No one was at the company Saturday afternoon for comment.

The accident caused no injuries, authorities said.
