Boy, 17, Dies After Being Hit During Target Practice
A 17-year-old youth was fatally shot Sunday during an outing of target practice with relatives outside Lancaster, authorities said.
Andy Chavez was target shooting with relatives near 195th Street East and Avenue F--a remote desert area east of Lancaster--when he was shot in the head about 10 a.m., said Deputy Victoria Berenbau, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Investigators were attempting to determine if Chavez shot himself or was accidentally shot by someone else.
The youth was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center, where he died about 4:15 p.m., hospital officials said.
Homicide detectives are investigating the shooting, Berenbau said.
