Microsoft Corp. on Wednesday recorded third-quarter net income that exceeded comparable year-ago results by 36%, as well as analysts’ expectations.

Microsoft, which produces software for personal computers, attributed the better results largely to its trademark Windows products that have more than 25 million users.

In the fiscal 1993 third quarter ended March 31, Microsoft posted net income of $243 million, or 80 cents a share, compared to $179 million, or 60 cents a share, the previous year. Revenue jumped a whopping 41% to $958 million from $681 million.

“These results reflect the continuing adoption of Microsoft Windows by our customers around the world, as well as the ongoing popularity of the MS-DOS operating system,” said Chief Financial Officer Frank Gaudette.

Wall Street had anticipated Microsoft would earn 78 cents a share.
