Water Officials

I never ceased to be amazed by public officials who feel they have license to bankroll unacceptable business perks at taxpayer expense (“Water District Money Spent on Lavish Trips, Perks,” March 29).

Your coverage of Walter Knitz and Michael Lord of the Santa Margarita Water District is yet another example of public spending accountability gone sour. They have taken the notion of “reasonable and acceptable” expenses in the course of doing business a few steps to far. Limousine rides, lavish meals, and vehicle wax jobs are simply unacceptable. The district’s board of directors, accountable to all landowners, appears to have failed in their fiduciary duty as overseers.
