GARDEN GROVE : Old Marquee to Get $9,000 New Look

Share

City Council members, sitting as directors of the community development agency, have approved spending $9,000 in redevelopment money to refurbish the marquee at the Gem Theatre and make other improvements.

The marquee, which was imported from a movie theater in Long Beach, has advertised coming attractions in Garden Grove for 15 years. Exposed to sun and heat, the marquee lost adhesiveness over the years, and volunteers have been forced to secure lettering with tape.

The marquee also announces coming productions at the adjoining GroveShakespeare Amphitheater.

Officials voted to install new plastic for the marquee and to purchase new lettering. They also agreed to paint the south wall of the Gem and install new banners at the amphitheater to create a festive atmosphere.

Officials said they are forced to use redevelopment money for the project because revenue is unavailable from the general fund.

In a report to agency officials, Director of Community Development Matthew Fertal said the use of redevelopment money is justified because it will improve a public facility in a redevelopment area and will attract business people and residents to the area.

The city purchased the Gem Theatre at 12851 Main St. in 1977. The city refurbished the building at a cost of nearly $1 million, using federal funds available for public facilities, Assistant City Manager Mike Fenderson said.

The city also used federal money to make major interior renovations and double the capacity to 178 seats.
