LOS ANGELES : Council Bars $2,000 Trip by Airport Dept. Employee

Citing the city’s budget crisis, the Los Angeles City Council on Friday rejected a request by the Department of Airports to send an employee to a noise abatement conference in New Zealand at a cost of more than $2,000.

“We are disappointed that our employee won’t be able to go,” said airport spokesman Tom Winfrey. “We thought it was important.”

The council’s action comes amid controversy over recent trips by city officials to Europe and Asia. A policy approved earlier this month requires international travel requests to be reviewed by the mayor and council.

A separate trip planned by three airport employees to Vancouver, Canada, for an international conference won council approval.
