VENTURA : Insurance Agent Charged With Theft

Share

A Ventura insurance agent has been charged with burglary and grand theft for allegedly stealing $71,000 from a disabled woman who gave him the money for an annuity.

Terry J. Alderete, 50, is scheduled for arraignment Tuesday. He posted bail after his arrest four days ago, Deputy Dist. Atty. Jeffrey G. Bennett said.

The prosecutor said Alderete on July 13, 1992, took the money from the 64-year-old woman at her home. In February she discovered that the annuity had not been purchased and she notified Ventura police, Bennett said.

Prosecutors said Alderete deposited the woman’s money in his own bank account and used it for personal expenses. Bennett would not comment on whether his office has received other complaints about Alderete, who had an independent insurance company. Alderete could not be reached for comment.

If Alderete is convicted, he could be sentenced to seven years and eight months in prison, prosecutors said.
