GARDEN GROVE : Herbicide to Be Used on Vacant City Land
Officials in the next couple of weeks will try using an herbicide to get rid of weeds on about 45 acres of vacant land owned by the city’s Agency for Community Development.
For years, officials have used tractors to turn over the soil to get rid of the weeds at an annual cost of $60,000.
However, council members, sitting as directors of the Agency for Community Development, recently reached agreement with Landscape Pest Management of Orange to provide weed abatement services through the use of Roundup, an over-the-counter herbicide, at an annual cost of about $9,900.
Real Property Manager Armando Morales said a city plant care consultant had recommended the use of Roundup because it reportedly does not leave a toxic residue when properly applied. The herbicide is expected to control 95% of the weeds.
Morales also said the city received assurance from the Orange County Health Care Agency that the spray would cause no health problems as long as it is properly used.
Morales said the cities of Anaheim and Buena Park have been using herbicides for weed control for several years “with great success.”
Garden Grove’s weed abatement contract runs until next April 1.
