Explosive Detonates, Injures Two Players

Two Washington State football players riding in a pickup truck were hurt, one seriously, when an explosive device detonated in the vehicle, police said Tuesday.

Linebacker Harvey Macy (Buddy) Waldron, 22, of Bellevue, Wash., was in critical condition at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane and linebacker Payam Saadat, 20, of Santa Monica was in satisfactory condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, hospital officials said.

The nature of the explosive device and how it got into the truck weren’t immediately clear, police said.

Police and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms searched the players’ homes. Material for making explosives was found at one of the residences, Tennant said.

Criminal charges might be pending, Tennant said.
