A record number of students transferred from Santa Monica College into the University of California system in 1992, continuing the community college’s ranking as the No. 1 feeder institution for the UC system.

Of the 502 Santa Monica College students who transferred to the UC system last fall, 333 went to UCLA and 51 to UC Berkeley, college spokesman Bruce Smith said. The number is a 16% increase over fall 1991, when 431 students were accepted by UC schools.

Among those transfer students were more black and Latino students than from any other two-year college, Smith added.

“The word is out that if you want to transfer to UC, come to Santa Monica College,” said Brenda Johnson, assistant dean of the college’s Transfer Center.

Santa Monica College has been the top UC system feeder for more than 10 years, Smith said.

In 1992, Santa Barbara City College ranked second with 404 students transferred.
