Year-Round Schools

Share

In refusing to scrap its year-round schedule (April 9), the Los Angeles school board has expressed its desire to keep all options open on May 3.

I can understand the board members’ reluctance to switch back to a traditional school plan. So I strongly urge them to consider altering the current calendar in the San Fernando Valley to eight weeks of vacation in the summer, five weeks in the winter and one week in the spring.

This would alleviate two problems. It would allow the children to start school in September, when most of the stifling and potentially dangerous heat is finally abating. It would also ease the burden for parents who need to find something productive for their children to do for eight long weeks in the winter.
