WORDS OF HATE
Wisconsin’s brief experiment in the regulation of campus speech was doomed from the get-go. Not simply because a hate-speech code tramples on the First Amendment’s free-speech guarantees, but also because it addressed only the symptoms of intolerance. Only dedicated and long-lasting attention to the causes of the hatred that divides, angers and disables America can even begin the long road to recovery. We can only hope that the patient--American society--is not too far gone to respond to the cure.
