5 Service Groups to Share $77,000 in Federal Grants

Five community service groups have been awarded nearly $77,000 in federal grants by the Malibu City Council for the 1993-94 fiscal year.

The awards are made through the federal community development grant program, which allocated $71,785 to the city this year for programs benefiting low- and moderate-income residents, city officials said. In addition, the city has $60,000 in federal grant funds left over from 1992-93 that can be used this year.

The grants were awarded to the following groups:

* SANE, an educational program for elementary schoolchildren aimed at reducing early experimentation with drugs, will receive $10,873. The program is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

* The Point Dume Community Service District will receive $10,000, to be divided equally between its after-school day-care program and its Malibu Community Center Summer Day Camp. The grants will fund scholarships to enable children from low- and moderate-income families to attend.

* The Children’s Lifesaving Foundation was awarded $15,000 for a camp counselor and recreation equipment for its Circle X Malibu Kids Camp program. The camp provides overnight summer camp education and counseling to children from low- and moderate-income families.

* The Malibu Community Labor Exchange received $35,000, the same amount as last year, to fund its employment program. The nonprofit group helps match low- and moderate-income individuals with employers offering temporary employment.

* The Westside Fair Housing Counsel was awarded $6,000 to provide landlord/tenant counseling services and speakers at public forums and to distribute information about fair-housing practices.

The city will have about $53,000 remaining that can be used for future projects, city officials said.
