Tommy, Can You Set a Record?: “Tommy,” the stage adaptation of the 1969 rock opera by The Who which opened on Broadway Thursday to mostly rave reviews, set a Broadway one-day sales record. The show took in $495,822 on Friday, beating the record set by “Guys and Dolls” (also on that musical’s post-opening day) by almost $100,000. A spokesman for “Tommy,” which opened at the La Jolla Playhouse last summer and is being directed in New York by the Playhouse’s Des McAnuff, said the show sold a staggering 1,000 tickets an hour on Friday.
