LA HABRA : School Board to OK Policy on Weapons

To discourage children from bringing weapons to school, La Habra City School District Trustees have tentatively approved an anti-weapons policy.

School board members are expected to unanimously approve the second reading of the policy when it comes before them at their May 13 meeting. The new rule would give district personnel the right to confiscate weapons or replicas of them and to suspend or expel students who are caught with them.

Students will not be allowed to bring firearms, explosives, knives, razors, slingshots, other possibly harmful instruments or any replicas to school.

In the past two years, one student was caught brandishing a replica and another was suspected of possessing one. In the future, students caught with such instruments will be reported to police and face the possibility of expulsion.

“It’s become a sad reality of life that kids do bring weapons to school,” said Morrison M. Clements, school board president. “The district will now have a vehicle to take fairly severe disciplinary action.”
