Keating’s Motion for New Trial Rejected: Motions for acquittal and a new trial for former savings and loan executive Charles Keating were tentatively rejected by a federal judge. Keating and his son, Charles Keating III, were convicted in January on multiple counts of fraud, conspiracy and racketeering in connection with the collapse of Irvine-based Lincoln Savings & Loan Assn. Keating’s attorney, Stephen Neal, claimed that federal jurors got word of Keating’s earlier conviction in California state court and, as a result, were prejudiced against his client. U.S. District Judge Mariana Pfaelzer said she could find no evidence that such information affected the jury’s decision.
