EL RIO : Girl Pleads Guilty to Attempted Murder
A 13-year-old girl pleaded guilty Monday to charges of attempted murder, grand theft of an automobile and assault with a firearm on a police officer for her role in the March 7 shooting of her mother, Senior Deputy Dist. Atty. Ron C. Janes said.
The El Rio girl could be remanded to the California Youth Authority until her 25th birthday when she is sentenced May 24 by Ventura County Superior Court Judge Steven Z. Perren.
The girl and her 17-year-old male companion are accused of shooting Catherine Beverford, 34, of El Rio, four times in the head with a handgun.
Beverford survived the attack; none of the bullets penetrated her skull.
After the shooting, police said, the pair drove Beverford to Ventura County Medical Center before stealing her van and fleeing to Northern California. There, they engaged in a gunfight with Vallejo police before being arrested, police said. The youths’ names have not been released because of their ages.
The youth, whom investigators believe fired the shots at Beverford, faces a hearing today to determine whether he will be tried as an adult.
