AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : White Sox Jump on Valenzuela Early, Win, 7-0

Frank Thomas hit a three-run home run in the first inning against Fernando Valenzuela at Chicago, and Wilson Alvarez pitched the White Sox past the Baltimore Orioles, 7-0, Monday night.

Robin Ventura also homered for the White Sox. Baltimore lost for the fifth time in six games.

Alvarez (1-0) scattered seven hits in eight innings, struck out four and walked one.

Valenzuela (0-2) lasted only four innings in his second start of the season. He gave up four runs, three of them earned, and six hits.

Detroit 5, Kansas City 3--The Tigers, coming off three lopsided victories, struck for four runs in the first inning at Kansas City to win their sixth consecutive game.

Detroit won for the 11th time in 12 games. The Tigers trounced Minnesota three consecutive times over the weekend.

Tony Phillips, the leading hitter in the AL, led off the game with a single. Travis Fryman followed with a single, and Phillips scored on center fielder Brian McRae’s error. Kirk Gibson doubled for a 3-0 lead, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

Tom Bolton (1-0) gave up one run and four hits in five innings.

After the game, which dropped Kansas City to a 7-12 record, Royal Manager Hal McRae, screaming profanities and sweeping tape recorders off his desk, left his office littered with broken glass and sent a reporter to the trainer’s room with a cut cheek.

The tirade was touched off when a radio reporter asked McRae why he didn’t use left-handed hitting George Brett to pinch-hit for Keith Miller in the seventh inning with the bases loaded with two out against right-handed David Haas.

Seattle 6, Cleveland 3--Dave Valle hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning at Seattle, leading Randy Johnson and the Mariners past the Indians.

Johnson (3-1) gave up seven hits, struck out seven, walked one and hit a batter.

Albert Belle’s seventh home run of the season put Cleveland ahead, 3-2, in the sixth inning.

But the Mariners rallied when Rich Amaral doubled off Matt Young in the sixth and Valle connected against Tom Kramer (0-1) for his second home run of the season.

Buhner, who drove in two runs, and Ken Griffey Jr. each had three hits for the Mariners.

Toronto 8, Texas 6--Jack Morris struggled to his first victory of the season and Joe Carter homered and drove in three runs at Toronto.

The Blue Jays had a season-high 16 hits, four by Roberto Alomar. Paul Molitor had three hits and drove in two runs.

Morris (1-3) gave up four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Rangers scored once in the ninth inning off Mike Timlin and Duane Ward relieved. Jose Canseco hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly before Ward finished up for his seventh save in seven chances.

Carter hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning. His sixth home run of the season came off Craig Lefferts (1-4) and made it 6-1. Lefferts gave up 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Milwaukee 10, Minnesota 3--Bill Spiers hit a two-run single at Milwaukee, highlighting a seven-run fifth inning and handing the Twins their fourth consecutive loss.

Ricky Bones (1-1) gave up one run on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking two.

Kevin Tapani (0-3) gave up nine runs, seven earned, and eight hits in four innings.
