Lonnie Smith, the one-time Atlanta Brave, homered on an 0-and-2 pitch to lead off the 11th inning Monday at Atlanta and give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 4-3 victory.

Smith, who played for the Braves the previous five seasons before signing as a free agent this winter, hit his first home run of the season against Greg McMichael (0-1).

Smith entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning and walked, setting off the Pirates’ three-run rally that tied the score, 3-3.

“That was a nice scenario,” Pittsburgh Manager Jim Leyland said. “Lonnie Smith had done that to us a lot over the years.”

Blas Minor (3-0) picked up the victory with two scoreless innings of relief. Stan Belinda pitched the 11th for his fifth save.

Philadelphia 9, San Francisco 8--The Phillies overcame an 8-0 deficit and beat the Giants at Philadelphia when the winning run scored in the 10th inning on a wild pitch.

Juan Bell walked to start the Philadelphia 10th, then advanced to third on an infield single and a throwing error by shortstop Royce Clayton.

Gino Minutelli (0-1), San Francisco’s seventh pitcher, threw a wild pitch on the first pitch to Dave Hollins, scoring Bell to give the Phillies their fourth victory in a row.

The Giants took advantage of 11 walks and two errors to build their 8-0 advantage.

But the Phillies scored three in the sixth inning, four in the seventh and tied it, 8-8, in the eighth on Mickey Morandini’s triple and Jim Eisenreich’s single.
