Obituaries : Thomas J. Long; Co-Founder of Longs Drug Stores
Thomas J. Long, 82, co-founder of the Oakland-based Longs Drug Stores. Long and his brother, Joseph M. Long, who died in 1990, started the company in 1938. It has grown to 274 stores with more than 15,000 employees in five states. Thomas Long had retired from the company in 1975, but remained an active member of the board of directors until his death. He became a philanthropist in his later years, donating money to cultural and civic endeavors through his Thomas J. Long Foundation. On Monday in Walnut Creek, Calif.
