CALABASAS : Sheriff to Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint
- Share via
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies will conduct a sobriety checkpoint between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. May 7 in Calabasas. The checkpoints are set up on a monthly basis to discourage drunk driving.
Deputy Hugh Wahler said the deputies normally block all but one lane of an undisclosed roadway and stop about one in five cars to see if the drivers have been drinking.
Past checkpoints have led to an average of about two drunk-driving arrests per night in the areas covered by the Lost Hills and Malibu stations, Wahler said.
Wahler said the task is tedious but not unpleasant for deputies. “Ninety percent of people thank us for doing it. It’s really surprising,” he said.
