Share

A Palmdale doughnut shop owner was shot and killed early Friday after he apparently stumbled upon burglars breaking into a neighboring liquor store, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said.

Souy Cheng Hear, 43, apparently heard sounds of glass breaking about 1:30 a.m. and walked out of Valley Donuts in the 2200 block of E. Palmdale Boulevard to investigate the noise, Deputy Irma Becerra said. Sheriff’s officials believe he was shot once in the head after he observed a break-in at Palmdale Liquor & J R Markets.

Hear was found by deputies patrolling the street and was taken to Palmdale Hospital Medical Center, where he died at 4:26 a.m., Becerra said.

A co-owner of the liquor store next door said a glass door had been broken, and several cartons of Marlboro cigarettes were stolen.

“Our neighbor was a very nice man, a good neighbor,” the woman said. “I do not know why they shot him.”

Sheriff’s deputies said they have no one in custody in the slaying.
