The Flaws in Defense of ‘Indecent Proposal’ Script

Share

Are director Adrian Lyne, Jones and Pamplin heavily into denial or what?

I saw “Indecent Proposal” with the general public on opening night, and it was a few boys from the hood cracking jokes about the film’s absurdities--not a critic. It was a popcorn chomping fan who yelled at the screen and called Moore a slut before walking out. Even the girl sitting next to me who giggled at everything at the beginning of the movie turned stone cold by the end. Every lamebrained action by the characters caused the audience to suck their teeth and sigh in disgust in unison.

Now where did Pamplin and Lyne get the idea that good box office means the audience loved the film? Good opening box office only means, especially in this case, that the marketing worked.

Good box office shouldn’t overshadow or, in Lyne’s case, justify a mess like “Proposal.”
