PREP SWIMMING ROUNDUP : Kennedy’s Boys, Girls Make Quick Work of the League Championships

Share

The victory didn’t shock Kennedy, but how quickly the boys’ and girls’ teams achieved it did.

“The finish wasn’t a surprise, but the times were as fast as I could have expected,” said Kennedy Coach Rich Kanter after his swimmers dominated the Garden Grove League team championships Thursday at Golden West College.

The Fighting Irish capped their perfect league seasons--both teams were 7-0--with decisive victories. It was a sixth team championship for the Kennedy boys and the sixth in the last seven years for the girls.

The Los Amigos boys finished second to Kennedy; La Quinta was runner-up to the Fighting Irish girls.

Wendy Martin set a league record in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 25.57 seconds, breaking the 1990 mark of 25.79 established by La Quinta’s Carin Whittington. Martin also won the 500 free.

Whittington, winner of the 100 and 200 frees, was the girls’ swimmer of the meet.

La Quinta also took boys’ swimmer of the meet honors. Brett Bhesania won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke.

Wendy wasn’t the only Martin to turn in winning times Wednesday. Brother Tim Martin won the 200 free and 100 butterfly.
