City to Allow Ads at Bus Stops, Benches

Share

In an effort to raise money, City Council members tentatively voted this week to allow private companies to advertise on public bus shelters and benches.

City officials hope the move will bring the city about $10,000 a year.

Currently, the city code prohibits any advertising on the public right of way.

The action would allow private companies to build shelters around city benches on major streets and sell the advertising space. The city would receive a percentage of the income.

The proposed ordinance, which is expected to pass unanimously at the next City Council meeting May 21, would prohibit any advertisements of alcohol and cigarettes.
