BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Zane Smith Is Still Far From Ready
When Zane Smith threw for the first time in spring training in February, Pittsburgh Pirate pitching coach Ray Miller predicted the left-hander would not return to the majors until June.
Miller’s prediction apparently could not have been more accurate.
Smith still seems to be weeks away from pitching against major league hitting after giving up two runs on six hits over three innings in the Pirates’ exhibition Thursday against triple-A Buffalo.
Smith, who underwent surgery on his left shoulder last November, faced live hitters for the first time since last October.

The New York Mets put pitcher Sid Fernandez on the 15-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to May 1, because of a small cartilage tear in his right knee.
To take his spot on the roster, the Mets activated reliever John Franco, who had been sidelined because of a sore left elbow.
