BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Strawberry Fans in Candlestick Cold

Share

Darryl Strawberry, who has missed the past four games because of a stiff back, took batting practice twice Friday and felt fine. But there was no way with the swirling cold winds in Candlestick Park that he was going to start.

He pinch-hit in the sixth inning and struck out on three pitches against Dave Burba with runners on first and third.

How cold was it?

“It used to be worse when I played here in 1962,” coach Manny Mota said. “Then the park wasn’t enclosed, so the wind blew in from the bay even worse. But tonight, this is cold.”

The weather is all too familiar to Cory Snyder, who played for the Giants last season. “If it’s this windy during batting practice, it won’t be as windy during the game,” said Snyder, who has started in right field since Strawberry has been out.

“It’s the hardest right field to play in the league. The wind comes in over left field into right and swirls. If the ball is hit into the gap between center and right it carries, but if it is hit down the line in right it goes foul.”

Todd Worrell, who has been sidelined since April 8 because of a pulled muscle in his forearm, is throwing regularly off the mound but is still not 100%. There is no indication when he will be ready. . . . The Dodgers had Ken Dayley examined Friday at UCLA to see if doctors there can help him in case he is still being troubled by vertigo. Dayley, a left-handed reliever, has not pitched well since the Dodgers signed him to a triple-A contract. . . . Vice President Fred Claire said Kevin Elster still is not throwing with complete velocity from shortstop in double-A San Antonio. Claire has until May 17 to sign Elster to the major league roster.
