PGA champion Nick Price of Zimbabwe shot an eight-under-par 64 Saturday at Marietta, Ga., to build a one-shot lead after three rounds of the Atlanta Classic.

Price, who won The Players Championship earlier this year, had a bogey-free round on the hilly, 7,018-yard Atlanta Country Club course for a 54-hole total of 200, 16 under par.

Mark Calcavecchia birdied the final hole to complete a 67 that left him alone in second place at 201.

For the second year in a row, a Georgia Tech product generated the most third-round excitement. Jimmy Johnston, a tour rookie who has made only two cuts in 10 events, had two eagles in a round of 64 that left him two shots off the lead at 202.

Johnston was tied for third with Dillard Pruitt, who shot 68.

“To tell you the truth, I’m flabbergasted,” Johnston said.

In the third round a year ago, Georgia Tech amateur David Duval led after shooting a 66. Duval fell into a tie for 13th the next day when he shot 78.

Price, who moved into contention with a 67 on Friday, got into a share of the lead on No. 13 when Calcavecchia fell one shot back with a bogey.

Mike Springer had a 68-203, and another shot back were Nolan Henke (68) and Tom Sieckmann (70).

Second-round leader Billy Andrade had a 73, falling out of contention with a triple-bogey eight on No. 8 when he caught a fairway trap and a greenside bunker.

George Archer took control of the Legends of Golf at the 36-hole mark at Austin, Tex., as a 25-m.p.h. wind blew away most of his competition.

Archer, avoiding the disasters that slowed up his challengers, shot a second consecutive six-under-par 66 for a four-shot lead. His two-round total is 132, 12 under.

Gibby Gilbert, who shared the first-round lead with Tom Weiskopf, shot 71 for a 136 total and was tied with Larry Laoretti and Tommy Aaron, who had 66s. Weiskopf shot even-par 72 and was at 137.

Debbie Massey had a round of 64 at Nashville, Tenn., giving her a two-stroke lead after the second round of the $525,000 Sara Lee Classic.

Massey’s finish, for a total of 133, capped a day that saw the 36-hole cut fall at one-under-par 143, the first time on the LPGA tour that every player will enter the final day under par.

Meg Mallon followed at four-under-par 68 for a two-day total of 135.

Ayako Okamoto (71), Betsy King (69), Lisa Walters (68) and Dana Lofland-Dormann (70) are tied with a total of 136 in the 54-hole event.
