Accuracy and ’60 Minutes’
CBS’ “60 Minutes” recently used advocacy journalism to redeem an advocacy journalist--Raymond Bonner, who was pulled out of El Salvador by the New York Times in 1982. “60 Minutes” claimed Bonner was victimized by unfair criticism and that recent revelations vindicate him. CBS focused on only one story, the El Mozote massacre. Not denying the massacre, Bonner’s media critics questioned his numbers and so does the recent report of the U.N. Truth Commission.
