THE VOICES OF MOTHERHOOD

Share

Motherhood has more than one face.

Working mothers. Single mothers. Stepmothers. Grandmothers. Foster mothers. Proud mothers. Worried mothers. Joyful mothers. Frazzled mothers. Grateful mothers.

In anticipation of Mother’s Day, Times correspondent Lynda Natali interviewed seven Orange County women about motherhood. We invited them to our photo studio, where Times artist Val B. Mina painted their favorite childhood images on their faces.

Among the seven, we found only one common thread--the intensity of mother love:

“Motherhood is the greatest joy you will ever experience, and it can also be the greatest frustration.”

“I had the opportunity to quit work. I realized nobody was going to care (at work) if I was there 10 years down the line, but my kids would.”

“We had one (foster) child stay 2 1/2 years before being sent to an adoptive home. That was real hard.”

“They tell their friends they need to live up to their mom’s expectations. This is my reward.”
