Compromise on Desert Bill

In response to “Compromise by Feinstein on Desert Measure Possible,” April 28:

We object your characterization of Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-Redlands) as a “moderate with a solid environmental record.”

Lewis has one of the lowest environmental scores in Congress, according to the annual Environmental Scorecard published by the League of Conservation Voters. In 1992, Lewis earned an abysmal 6% environmental score, one of the lowest in the House and well below the 17% average for GOP members of Congress.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) is to be commended for identifying and supporting the California Desert Protection Act as legislation essential to the environment and beneficial to the economy of California.

Since the desert bill was first introduced in 1986, nearly 150 changes have been made to accommodate special interests. Boundaries have been changed and language added to satisfy all valid concerns.
