Deputizing Citizens
In response to “Tilt the Odds: Deputize John and Jane Public,” Commentary, May 3:
Daniel Polsby proposes one of the more outrageous solutions to street violence, which plays right into the hands of the National Rifle Assn. and the profit-motivated gun manufacturers. I’m sure they too would like to see more guns on the streets, in the hands of vigilantes, many of whom would be only too eager to play cops and robbers in our cities.
What we need is legislation to rid our streets of guns, not to put more guns out there to compete with guns that shouldn’t be there in the first place.
If the NRA would compromise on common-sense legislation, and if we had more courageous politicians, we could pass strong laws to make street guns unlawful. Citizens would still be able to have guns to defend their homes--and that’s where the guns should stay.
