A 19-year-old Tustin woman was injured Monday afternoon when a trailer truck jackknifed on the southbound Costa Mesa Freeway and struck her car.

Rebecca Brown was transported to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach after being treated at the scene, said Capt. Richard Reeder of the Orange County Fire Department.

The collision occurred about 1:30 p.m. near the transition ramp to the San Diego Freeway and blocked three lanes of southbound traffic back to the Garden Grove Freeway for half an hour, a California Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Reeder and other firefighters were on the freeway helping to extinguish a car fire when the crash occurred nearby. “We heard the tires screeching and looked up and saw the accident,” Reeder said.

Reeder said Brown, who suffered a bruised leg and cut arm, could easily have been seriously hurt.

“The rear trailer swung around into her lane and the rear wheels went across the hood of her car. She was actually pretty lucky,” Reeder said.
