Tustin School to Demonstrate Computer Uses

Columbus Tustin Middle School has been selected to participate in a state program that integrates computers with daily classroom activities.

The state Department of Education chose Columbus Tustin to take part in the Institute for Information Age Education because the school already has extensive experience with computers and other high-technology gadgets, officials said.

“We have made a commitment to infuse technology into our school as a tool for powerful learning,” said Principal Bob Boies.

A team from the school, the Tustin Unified School District and the Orange County Board of Education will train for two weeks in Northern California in the use of computers in the classroom, Boies said.

Columbus Tustin was also selected as a training center for teachers in the state’s Technology in Education program. Under that program, teams from various schools in Southern California will be trained next year at the school in computer applications for the classrooms.

Three other California schools were chosen for the project--Washington Elementary School in Madera, Foshay Junior High School in Los Angeles and Gilroy High School in Gilroy.

The state program is jointly sponsored by several private corporations, including IBM and Apple Computer.
