Views of 3rd District Candidates Sought

Aiming to compare the views of candidates in the tight race for the Los Angeles City Council’s 3rd District seat, the Ventura Boulevard Council sent candidate Laura Chick and incumbent Joy Picus questionnaires Tuesday asking for their stances on key valley issues.

The conservative advisory council, representing six homeowner and resident associations from along the Ventura Freeway corridor, plans to tabulate the candidates’ responses and print them in individual associations’ newsletters before the June 20 election.

Council coordinator Tony Lucente said that although the council will not make an endorsement in the election, the information on the questionnaire would help people in the Valley make informed decisions.

“We thought this was a good way to make the candidates aware of the issues that are important to us,” Lucente said. “And a good way to see where they stand.”

The survey, which was sent to mayoral candidates in March, probed the candidates’ views on issues from growth to schools to crime.

Specifically, it sought views on noise regulation at Van Nuys Airport, proposed growth of the Burbank Airport and dismantling of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Gerald A. Silver, also a member of the council, said although mayoral candidate Richard Riordan failed to fill out a questionnaire before the primary, he has since done so.
