U.S. Stars May Play in Davis Cup
The U.S. Davis Cup team does not find out until Thursday who it will play next, but captain Tom Gorman already has a pretty good idea what team he will field.
Gorman said Tuesday that Pete Sampras, Jim Courier and Andre Agassi are “very interested” in playing the qualifying-round match Sept. 24-26.
Said Gorman: “(Agassi) said he would do whatever it takes to win the match.”
The United States must win in order to return to the World Group in 1994. The U.S. opponent might come from one of eight countries--the Bahamas, Korea, Hungary, Cuba, Belgium, New Zealand, Israel or Denmark. A coin flip would determine which country would host the match.
Sampras, Courier and Agassi didn’t play when the United States lost its first-round match to Australia to drop out of the World Group. “As far as I’m concerned, that’s history,” Gorman said.
