Pasadena : Civic Center West Started
Developers broke ground on the long-awaited Civic Center West project Tuesday. The $56-million development, on the site of the city’s former police headquarters, is expected to bring 374 new housing units to the city by mid-1994.
The project is the first development in Southern California to incorporate a light-rail station, said the developers, a partnership of the Janss Corp. and The Housing Group. The station, which will be constructed by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, will eventually offer light-rail transportation to Union Station.
“There are a lot of positive pieces about this project,” said Mayor Rick Cole. He cited, among other things, the fact that 20% of the new housing units will be designated for low-income families.
The five-acre site is bounded by Holly, Marengo and Walnut streets and, on the west, Memorial Park.
