CALABASAS : School Board OKs Bigger Class Sizes
Faced with a fourth straight year of budget cuts, the Las Virgenes Unified School District board has approved an increase in class sizes and eliminated funding for programs to help struggling elementary school students.
As part of a $496,000 budget reduction package approved Tuesday night, the board cut a transitional program for children who have good learning skills but are deemed too immature emotionally to succeed in the first grade. The board also cut a reading program.
After a series of public meetings, the board spared the high school library staff and an award-winning elementary school science lab program. Other cuts were made to the administrative budget and subsidies for busing.
The reductions will be considered again when the board approves the final budget next month.
