Antonovich and the Poster

Share

Supervisor Mike Antonovich’s recent outcry over Robbie Conal’s “DiS ARM” poster proves the adage that “beauty (or the lack thereof) is in the eye of the beholder” (“Antonovich Slams Latest Conal Poster,” May 6).

That Conal’s burning baton could be perceived by the supervisor as “glorifying violence” defies the poster’s visual content. By this logic, Dali’s melted watches would constitute a “glorification of timekeeping” and Picasso’s “Guernica” a “celebration of war.”

I suggest that Antonovich read the imagery for what it is--a call to end one of the many kinds of violence within our society, police brutality. The cataclysmic events of April, 1992, will not vanish into history. Our only hope of benefit from our city’s trauma will come from opening the dialogue. “DiS ARM,” in its haiku-like eloquence, attempts just that.
