LA HABRA : Schoolteachers to Get 5% Raise in New Pact
La Habra City School District teachers are jubilant over a contract ratified Thursday night by the Board of Trustees that gives them a 5% pay raise over the next three years.
The contract also makes it mandatory that all teachers join the La Habra Education Assn., a provision that members had failed to negotiate for years.
“This is wonderful and couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Linda Malloi, president of the association. “There are no free lunches any more.”
Because union membership had been voluntary for more than 20 years, only 70% of the district teachers joined, Malloi said, adding that non-members still reaped the benefits when raises and other benefits were negotiated.
“Now it will be fair for everyone,” she said.
Teachers will vote on union dues Wednesday. District officials expect the dues will remain the same--$64 a month per teacher.
