Justice Cancels Speech Over TV Cameras
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun has canceled a UC Davis Law School graduation speech because television cameras will be allowed, university officials said Friday.
UC Davis administrators said Blackmun insisted that the university bar TV news cameras from recording his May 22 address, but they could not honor the request.
“To bar any element of the news media from a public ceremony at a public university was not, in our view, appropriate,” Larry Vanderhoef, executive vice chancellor and provost, said in a written statement.
Vanderhoef said Blackmun’s decision to withdraw as commencement speaker was a great disappointment.
Law School Dean Bruce Wolk said a replacement speaker will be selected soon.
