San Marino : $20-Million Claim Rejected

Friends and family of Pasadena barber Michael Bryant want the San Marino City Council to disclose more details about how he died in police custody March 9.

Although Police Chief Frank Wills agreed to meet with Bryant’s friends, council members gave no new details Wednesday about Bryant’s death before rejecting a $20-million claim by his family against the city.

“The City Council of San Marino should provide us with information,” said Gary Moody, a spokesman for the 30 or so members of Friends of Michael Bryant who attended the meeting. “You have a duty as human beings to find the truth.”

Bryant died after a car chase that began with his flagging down a San Marino police officer. The chase concluded with his leaving his car, running down a Highland Park hillside and falling into an apartment complex swimming pool, where Los Angeles police officers shot him with a Taser gun and placed him hogtied in the back of a San Marino police car, police said.

He died of cocaine intoxication and asphyxiation caused by the hogtying, the county coroner said.

Pasadena police also were involved in the death, which is now being investigated by the FBI.
