VETERAN OBSERVER: Three Ventura County women will soon be training to fly Navy combat aircraft (B1), and Florella McIntyre Downs says it’s about time. “I think that’s a good idea,” said the 70-year-old Ventura woman, who just returned from a celebration in Fresno honoring the Women’s Air Force Service Pilots. . . . As a WASP, Downs ferried planes for the Army during World War II but was banned from combat duty. “It’s essential that they do the same work,” she said. “Otherwise, it’s discrimination against the men.”
