Pop Goes the Awards: Michael Bolton and Mariah Carey were named songwriters of the year at the Broadcast Music Inc.’s 41st Annual Pop Awards Dinner honoring the past year’s top songwriters and music publishers. Calvin Lewis and Andrew J. Wright’s Motown melody, “When a Man Loves a Woman,” was named song of the year for being the most-performed song and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” won for most-performed college song of the year. Warner Music Group was named publisher of the year Tuesday at the BMI dinner in Beverly Hills.
