AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Stewart, Blue Jays Hammered by Red Sox

Once the Red Sox nemesis, Dave Stewart was hit hard in his continuing comeback from an arm injury, giving up 10 runs, seven hits and five walks in 1 2/3 innings as Boston beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 10-5, Wednesday night at Boston.

He had won 13 decisions in a row against the Red Sox before losing his last start against them last season to Danny Darwin, who beat him again Wednesday. Stewart left Oakland as a free agent last winter.

Darwin (4-4) won his fourth consecutive start but had a 20-inning scoreless string ended on John Olerud’s run-scoring single in the fourth. He gave up six hits, including three doubles by Joe Carter, and one walk and struck out one in seven innings.

Stewart (0-1) began the season on the disabled list with a torn muscle in his right forearm and returned last Thursday, pitching 3 2/3 shutout innings against Detroit.

Kansas City 13, Oakland 8--Wally Joyner had two of his three hits in the first inning as the Royals scored nine runs with two out at Kansas City.

Joyner, George Brett, Felix Jose, Mike Macfarlane, Greg Gagne and Chris Gwynn had two runs batted-in apiece.

Everybody in the Royals’ lineup scored in the first against Shawn Hillegas (1-4). Tom Gordon (1-2) got the victory in relief. Jeff Montgomery got the final four outs for his 11th save.

After Troy Neel gave Oakalnd a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run single, Brett began Kansas City’s two-out assault with a single. Joyner doubled, Macfarlane singled, Gwynn singled, Phil Hiatt walked, Gagne singled, Chico Lind singled, Jose singled, Brian McRae grounded into a fielder’s choice that left all runners safe, Brett walked and Joyner singled before Macfarlane’s grounder ended it.

New York 11, Minnesota 6--Jim Leyritz’s pinch-hit double keyed a five-run seventh inning at Minneapolis as the Yankees completed their first sweep of the Twins since April of 1988.

Danny Tartabull drove in four runs with a homer and double and Rich Monteleone (4-3) gave up only three hits in 5 1/3 innings for the Yankees.

The Twins have lost four games in a row. Scott Erickson (2-5) gave up seven runs and 11 hits in six-plus innings.

Texas 4, Seattle 3--Doug Strange hit a two-out single in the ninth inning to drive in Ivan Rodriguez and give the Rangers the victory at Arlington, Tex.

Rodriguez tripled into the right field corner against Erik Hanson (5-1). Hanson walked left-handed hitter Rafael Palmeiro to face Dean Palmer, who struck out. Strange followed with a single into the right-field corner to make a winner of Tom Henke (3-1).

Henke was within one out of his eighth save when pinch-hitter Jay Buhner tied the game, hitting a 1-and-1 pitch over the center field fence for his 10th homer.

Detroit 8, Milwaukee 6--Tony Phillips had four of the Tigers’ 16 hits and drove in two runs at Milwaukee.

The victory lifted Detroit 10 games over .500 for the first time since 1991.

Detroit collected 13 hits in 4 2/3 innings against Mike Boddicker (3-2) and knocked him out in a three-run fifth inning that snapped a 4-4 tie.

Greg Vaughn hit two homers for the Brewers, his ninth and 10th of the season, in a game delayed for 50 minutes by rain after the sixth inning.

Baltimore 6, Cleveland 3--David Segui and Sherman Obando had three hits and three runs batted in apiece at Baltimore, leading the Orioles over the Indians.

Rick Sutcliffe had a shutout until the eighth inning, when the Indians snapped a 23-inning scoreless streak. Sutcliffe (4-2) gave up two runs on nine hits in 7 2/3 innings.

The Orioles broke on top with a two-run first inning against Scott Scudder (0-1), who was just off the disabled list.
