Formal-Clad, Prom-Bound Girl Can Still Be Accessory to a Fashion Crime

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Primped for the prom: It’s one of the biggest nights of high school, the evening when a girl dons a formal and goes to the prom.

There were a lot of hours spent in the mall trying to find the right dress, but unfortunately, some of the details were forgotten.

On the big night, young women often make the mistake of putting on their every day thin silver bangles, macrame bracelets and funky necklaces with their elegant attire. “The type of jewelry you wear changes with your dress; the more formal the dress, the more formal the jewelry,” says Linda Back of In The Event Fancy Formal Rentals in Orange.

Generally, you should coordinate attire so you pair glitzy jewelry with a plain dress and a more subdued necklace and bracelet to accent an ornate, heavily sequined dress. Also, try to pick up a color in the dress with the gem (or, more likely, rhine-) stones you’ll have on.

Capping it off: The Angels have fielded a new team this year, and to go along with the emphasis on change, the team is wearing new uniforms, a kind of retro-’50s look that nearly every other major league team has changed to. Among the hottest items around the county are the new Angel caps, which are navy and emblazoned with a classic “CA.”

But what about those “halo A” caps fans have been buying for years? Does it look like we’re out of touch if we wear them to Anaheim Stadium?

“You might get razzed a little since the new caps are better looking,” says Fran Thiele of Sports Fan Paradise in Costa Mesa. “The ‘Big A’ is out of style, at least for now.”

If you have an old Angel hat in the closet and you’re afraid of wearing it around, don’t throw it away. After a few seasons when people get used to the new Angel look, you can wear your dusty old hat as a symbol that you’ve been a fan since way back when.

A mini controversy: Last spring and summer the trend toward the short-short skirt was in full swing and hemlines crept up to early ‘70s levels. With the new season underway, many women are wearing last year’s short dresses, but is the mini style still looked at as good fashion or is it passe again?

“For casual or evening wear, the short-short skirt is still popular,” says clothing buyer Bill Rigioni of Huntington Beach. “It’s never been acceptable for work, and that’s where I think people get the bad image of the skirt.”

The leather or lame miniskirt is a great choice for evening wear, while the crocheted mini is excellent for casual events. Or be shocking with a patent leather skirt and matching thigh-high go-go boots. But remember, unless you work at the Whiskey on Sunset, you’re probably dressed a little too outrageously for the office.
