TENNIS ROUNDUP : Sanguinetti in Semifinals for UCLA

Davide Sanguinetti of UCLA continued his improbable run with two victories Friday to reach the semifinals of the NCAA men’s tennis championships at Athens, Ga.

Sanguinetti defeated Chuck Coleman of Notre Dame, 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 6-4, in the third round and Brian MacPhie of USC, 6-4, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.

Sanguinetti will face fourth-seeded Wade McGuire of Georgia, a 6-4, 6-1 winner over David Ekerot of USC, in today’s semifinals. McGuire, a finalist last year, has won 11 consecutive matches.

The unseeded Sanguinetti ousted second-seeded Daniel Courcol of Mississippi State, 6-4, 6-2, in a second-round match Thursday.

Robert Janecek, UCLA’s other remaining singles player, lost his third-round match to Roland Thornqvist of North Carolina, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Wayne Black of USC was eliminated by third-seeded Tamer El Saway of Louisiana State, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

In a second-round doubles match, Black and Kent Seton defeated Janecek and Sebastien LeBlanc, 6-2, 6-3.
